Race event 7 for 2007 is in the books. Decision was made to have another mulligan gamblers race and everyone had a great time. This is turning into a popular event and putting some decent $$ up for grabs. The final race was a close as you can get with a win margin of .000! Keep in mind that delay boxes are not permitted when looking at the RT’s. While it didn’t show on the computer or time slip (see attached) the win margin was in the 10,000 of a second range! Unfortunately rain appeared on Sunday when we were about 2/3 through the first round and the remainder of the day was lost. Because of the number of rainouts this year we have decided to add another weekend to the schedule October 6/7 bringing back the Turkey Nationals after a 3 year absence.

There may be only two regulars representing the local area at the Clarenville Dragway but Derick Martin and Merrill Baker have collected more than their share of hardware.

The pair continued their winning streak this past season.

The Dragway handed out the awards at their annual end-of-season banquet in St. John’s Nov. 4.

When the final points were tallied Baker found himself in third place in the coveted Top Driver category and second in the Super Pro class. An excellent showing, considering he was pretty much out of the standings with two events left in the season.

"I got into the quarter finals in the second last weekend which brought me up in the points where I had a shot at it."

From there Baker had to win the last event of the season to move into the top three.

"I knew the other guys had to lose and I had to win. I set my mind on that."

Baker says he beat all the cars he had to beat.

Not to be outdone, Martin walked away with second place in Pro Class and squeaked into the Gamblers fast five in fifth place.

Clarenville home dragway for another five years

KIRK SQUIRES

Clarenville will be home to the province’s only drag racing series for another five years.

Dragway organizers recently renewed their lease with the province to use the Clarenville airstrip for racing events through the summer.

"Our lease was up the end of October; we have signed a new five year deal," says Dragway organizer Dave Anthony.

"We are going to be staying for the foreseeable future. Personally, I love racing in Clarenville. As odd as it sounds, I think if it was in St. John’s I would probably race less.

"The weather is good, the nice thing is we are made to feel welcome and it makes everything much more enjoyable when you are not fighting city hall."

Even though the weather dealt the dragway a bad hand this year Anthony says the spectator count was on par with previous years.

"The biggest challenge was the car count because a lot of the weekends started with rain. A lot of the drivers have travel expenses . . . so if the forecast was bad they tended to shy away from it a little.

"We battled that a lot this summer," he says.

Playoff Time
Dragway points race down to the wire

The Packet
By KIRK SQUIRES

With two events left in the 2007 season competitors at the Clarenville Dragway are gearing up for a final run at the new Top Driver title.

Heading into the three week hiatus around the Labour Day weekend defending champ Derick Martin is still in the hunt for the new award. He’s also tied for first place in Pro Class and is in a three-way tie for third place in Gamblers competition.

Martin finished last season with three titles; Pro class, Gamblers and Top Eliminator. The Dragway replaced the Top Eliminator series this year with the Top Driver award.

Even though he is at or near the top in three categories Martin is not getting overconfident. With a handful of drivers, in each category, still in striking distance of the leader Martin says it’s anyone game.

Racing and emergency response: You can't have one without the other
St. John's Ambulance essential to Clarenville Dragway
Isthmus News
The Packet
By KIRK SQUIRES

When most people think about drag racing at the Clarenville Dragway they likely picture the brightly painted high horsepower cars heating up their tires in a cloud of thick tire smoke.

Few think about the black and white mobile first aid post positioned halfway down the track, tucked away into the approach road.

That black and white St. John Ambulance post is likely the most important piece of the drag racing puzzle.

Drag racing is a sport where the difference between winning and losing is measured in thousandths of a second. It’s a sport where competitors regularly reach speeds in excess of 150 miles per hour.
